The group is new and has no salaried posts open. Many people still reach a lab like this on money from their own country or from a European fellowship. These are the schemes I know fit, with the next deadline and what each of us has to do.

Doctoral
ChinaChina Scholarship Council~NOK 12 500 / month + return airfareOpens 10 Mar 2027Closes 1 Apr 2027
The route with the longest record in Norway. CSC funds 36–48 months abroad. It pays no tuition and no bench fee, and Norwegian doctoral education charges no tuition.
Timing. Online application 10 March – 1 April; home-university nomination by 15 April; results end of May. These are the 2026 dates; the 2027 guide is not out.
What I provide
- A written invitation letter naming the project, ready by mid-February
- A tuition-exemption certificate, once UiO admissions has confirmed it
- Supportive and constructive supervision and consumables
- A top-up where the stipend falls below the residence-permit income test
What you need to do
- Be under 35 and meet the English requirement; CSC does not accept an offer conditional on it
- Apply through CSC with the invitation letter
- Expect to return to China after the degree
The stipend alone is about NOK 3 000 a month short of the permit income test. The top-up is paid as a scholarship, not salary. CSC funds at most two students per foreign supervisor.
IndonesiaLPDP ScholarshipTuition, living allowance, travel, insuranceClosed31 Jul 2026
Indonesia’s education endowment sponsors full degrees abroad. The University of Oslo is on its list of approved destinations for all subjects, which removes the usual first obstacle.
Timing. The 2026 second phase ran 30 June – 31 July; results 30 November 2026. The 2027 schedule is not published.
What I provide
- A letter of invitation or acceptance support
- Supportive and constructive supervision and consumables
What you need to do
- Meet the English minimum for overseas doctorates; it differs between scheme years, so read the current guide
- A statement from a co-supervisor at an Indonesian university is preferred
- Apply through the LPDP portal in the next window
BrazilCAPES / CNPq doctoral sandwichPublished Norway rate ~NOK 10 550 / monthNext roundAnnual call; check the current notice
A split doctorate. You stay enrolled in Brazil and spend part of the degree here, so it suits a defined piece of work and gives no UiO degree.
Timing. Annual call; check the current notice.
What I provide
- An invitation letter with dates and a work plan
- Supportive and constructive supervision and consumables
- A top-up where the permit test requires one
What you need to do
- Be enrolled in a Brazilian doctoral programme
- Agree the stay with your Brazilian supervisor and with me
The published Norway rate is the furthest below the permit income test of any scheme here. Expect a top-up of about NOK 5 000 a month, planned in advance.

IndiaANRF Overseas Visiting Doctoral FellowshipUSD 2 000 / month, up to 12 monthsNext roundCalls are irregular; the last notice I found ran 1 Nov 2023 – 2 Jan 2024
The agency formerly called SERB now runs this. It is the lowest-friction doctoral route: an invitation from the host lab and the Indian supervisor’s recommendation. No admission to UiO and no three-year funding proof.
Timing. Calls are irregular; the last notice I found ran 1 Nov 2023 – 2 Jan 2024.
What I provide
- An invitation letter
- Supportive and constructive supervision, bench space and consumables
What you need to do
- Be a registered PhD student at an Indian institution
- Watch for the call and apply with the invitation
USD 2 000 a month clears the permit income test on its own, so no top-up. The stay is a visit and gives no UiO degree.
No open rounds here. Clear the filter, or write to me with your funder’s name.
Postdoctoral
Switzerland, host anywhereBranco Weiss Fellowship, Society in ScienceUp to CHF 600 000 over up to 5 yearsOpen15 Jan 2027
Funds a researcher’s own, unconventional project at a host anywhere in the world: about two and a half years, a review, then about two and a half more. It is not a post in my group. The project is yours and it is hosted here.
Timing. The registration portal closes 15 January 2027, 17:00 CET. The foundation advises submitting a day or two early.
What I provide

- Hold no faculty-equivalent position
- Propose work the foundation would not expect another funder to cover

European UnionMarie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellowship~EUR 126 300 / year with the Norway coefficientOpens 7 Apr 2027Closes ~8 Sep 2027
The strongest fellowship for coming to Norway. Two years, with research, training and management money attached.
Timing. Indicative: opens 7 April, closes 8 September 2027 at 17:00 Brussels time. The Commission has not published the 2027 call text.

- Have lived or worked in Norway no more than 12 of the 36 months before the deadline

The mobility rule excludes people already working in Norway. The living allowance is fixed when the grant is signed while salaries rise, so I budget a fellow at the bottom of the UiO pay band and the lab covers any gap.

Before you apply
Norwegian doctoral posts are normally salaried jobs
A stipendiat is an employee. The doctoral routes above work differently: you are admitted to the programme while a funder outside Norway pays you. The Faculty of Medicine accepts this kind of funding as external, as long as it covers the three years and is documented when you are admitted. I check the details with the faculty before I issue any invitation letter.
Some stipends sit below the residence-permit income test
A researcher living on own funds needs documented income of about NOK 15 500 a month. Where a scheme falls short I say so on that scheme. Any top-up is paid as a scholarship; paid as salary, it would put you on a different permit.
European fellowships exclude people already here
Marie Skłodowska-Curie and EMBO both bar applicants who have spent too long in Norway before the deadline. A year in Oslo first and a fellowship afterwards disqualifies you. Talk to me before you move.
Dates move
A date with a tilde (~) follows the last round’s pattern. “Official page read” means I opened the funder’s own page in the month shown. Schemes change their rules without much warning, so confirm on the funder’s page before you commit.
Your country is not listed?
Most national funders pay their own citizens to train abroad, and I have only mapped the ones above. Send me the name of your funder and its deadline. If it works for Oslo I will add it here.
Amounts and deadlines checked October 2026. Treat every figure as a starting point and confirm it on the official page linked from each entry. Other ways to work together, including sabbaticals and sponsoring a question, are on the Collaborate page.
